Contrary to the eye-catching headlines, our
compostable drinking cups are recyclable in many council paper recycling and compostable in many commercial facilities.
Compostable packaging is not some fancy idea we've come up with in isolation to annoy the waste industry. It is part of a global movement to reduce landfills.
Why use compostable drinking cups?
We are in an era of overconsumption. Plastic debris fills our oceans, with deadly effects on birds and Marine life, and is making its way up our food chain into our bodies. There is currently four times more plastic in our oceans than plankton. We can no longer ignore this problem and we should all look for solutions.
One such solution is to adapt to the circular economy with innovative material development, where all material resources are recycled or composted rather than lost or buried.
At Hyde we offer compostable alternatives to standard plastic
disposable foodservice packaging derived from limited fossil sources. Our products are designed for the circular economy, using rapidly renewable and sustainably sourced materials that can be recycled with any food waste in a commercial composting facility.
Compostable solutions
We do not want to be distracted by the limitations of an outdated waste management infrastructure from our mission to replace durable plastics in food service packaging. Consumers, businesses and, importantly, governments must work together to replace the current linear model, in which we extract resources faster than we replenish them and then bury them.
This is not futuristic thinking, this is actually happening in the US and Europe. In India, they did the same. In Germany and the Netherlands, almost nothing goes to landfills.
More and more people are paying attention to collecting compostable packaging from their residential green waste. Our goal is to remove all waste, especially organic waste from landfills. Contrary to popular belief, landfills are designed to store waste, not break it down. In fact, the decomposition of organic waste produces methane gas, which is 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
Recycling solutions
Contrary to recent media assumptions - all types of
paper cups (bioplastic lined and regular plastic lined) are recycled in residential and public recycling bins, and this has been confirmed in many areas. Bioplastics are non-toxic, plant-based materials that are easily separated from paper during repulping.
Our cups are certified for commercial composting, but not for home composting, which may not maintain the ideal conditions required to handle bioplastics. Home composting is a positive way to reduce our personal impact on the environment, but increasing home composting alone will never solve the problem of organic waste that ends up in landfills. A large amount of organic waste is generated outside the home environment and commercial composting ensures the rapid and efficient recycling of organic materials in large quantities.
