Plastic packaging? The paper packaging? Bagasse packaging? Modern shops are full of disposable food packaging. But which one is right for you? Are your disposable plates environmentally friendly? Affordable or gorgeous? In this article, we'll list some common food types so you can make informed decisions for your party or business.

  Plastic packaging
You might be surprised to learn that the cheapest plastic sheets are actually made from the same material as foam sheets -- polystyrene. The polystyrene used in disposable cutlery and cups is not foamed into styrofoam, but moulded directly into plates. Because of its low cost, polystyrene is one of the most widely used plastics.
Their price makes them a popular choice for some, but fragile plastics tend to crack and share many of the same health and environmental drawbacks as foam. When heated, polystyrene breaks down and releases the styrene into your food, which is a possible human carcinogen, meaning it has been linked to cancer in multiple scientific studies.
Like foam boards, plastic boards are not biodegradable. That means they will remain in our environment for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Polystyrene is one of the most common types of plastic waste in coasts, waterways and the Pacific Ocean.
Despite their popularity, many problems have arisen from the continued use of polystyrene products. If you are completely concerned about your family's health or the environment, it is best to avoid polystyrene altogether.

  Paper packaging
It may surprise you to know that making and using cardboard uses 60% more materials and produces 35% more greenhouse gases than foam board. But because paper doesn't suck out toxic chemicals and can be retained for thousands of years, it's still a big environmental upgrade. Paper, which usually breaks down within a year, is mostly made from organic materials, but most contain small amounts of oil, bleach and chemicals.
As you probably know, paper is made from trees. Unlike plastics and foams made from fossil fuels, trees used to make paper products are considered renewable resources. However, trees used for paper still take 20 years or more to grow, and demand for paper products is taking a toll. The production of paper products accounts for about 10% of global deforestation.
Still, if paper is the only option available to you, it definitely beats plastic and coated alternatives.

  Bagasse packaging
Bagasse products can sometimes be slightly more expensive than other disposable board options, but have multiple usability and environmental advantages. Bagasse is sugar cane fiber, which is another name for the natural waste product of sugar cane. Unlike pulp, which comes from slow-growing trees, sugar cane is a rapidly renewable resource that can mature within a year.
Good bagasse products are the most durable disposable plates you will find. Like polycoated or polystyrene boards, they easily resist moisture and grease. Bagasse products are microwave safe and can withstand temperatures above the boiling point of water. They don't bend as easily as paper, and they don't break as easily as plastic.
Besides durability, they are by far the most environmentally friendly boards we've talked about. Even when thrown away, bagasse quickly breaks down into harmless organic biomass in landfills and does not remain on our planet as garbage. Also, bagasse can be composted in your own backyard and turned into fertile fertile soil to continue the cycle of life.

Some businesses have started selling bagasse products, After all, bagasse packaging is getting more and more attention. so it's worth keeping an eye out for them at your local store, but if you want to make sure you get them at your next party, wedding or other event, you can visit The Hyde website for bagasse plates and bowls in a variety of shapes and sizes.
