In the past few years, plastic bags have been called the culprit of environmental pollutants and have been declared an environmental hazard. On the one hand, a dozen plastic bags are being distributed for free to consumers, and on the other hand, these consumers are using plastic
bread bags indiscriminately. Also, plastic bags are rarely reused and are usually thrown away after their first and only use. Now let's discuss the problems that can arise when using
custom plastic bread bags wholesale.
The current situation of plastic bags
One problem with plastic bags is that they are made from petrochemicals, a non-renewable resource. But the main problem is that they never crash. They may fall apart, or break into smaller pieces, but it actually takes hundreds or even thousands of years for plastics to degrade. Traditional plastic bags are not easily biodegradable under any normal circumstances. That being said, plastic bags are often not disposed of properly and pose a significant hazard to wildlife. Tens of thousands of whales, birds, seals and turtles die each year from garbage bags in the marine environment, often mistaking plastic
bags for food. Once ingested, the bag cannot be digested or passed through by the animal, so it remains in the digestive tract, preventing food from being digested and ultimately leading to a very slow and painful death.
Environmental groups have recently taken notice of this fact and have moved to abolish plastic bags, forcing retailers to seek alternative solutions. A more popular solution that has recently become more viable among retailers is to offer consumers reusable bags. While some of these bags do reduce plastic bag consumption and can help mitigate all of the harm plastic bags do to the environment, the main problems with their implementation are threefold.
The consumer market needs to understand this new way of shopping and why it's good for the environment.
This "education" comes at a high price in the form of advertising.
Biodegradable bags
There's another solution that's been floating around for the past few years, but never really hit the ground running. Biodegradable bags are usually starch-based, obtained from corn or potatoes, which can be converted into lactic acid, which can then be polymerized into a biodegradable plastic called polylactic acid. Corn or potato starch bags are still expensive compared to traditional plastic bags. Recently, however, some bags made from actual plant fibers are able to provide high-quality biodegradable bags at a reasonable price. These
biodegradable bags do offer a more viable solution to the aforementioned environmental issues and consumer behaviour change issues.
Biodegradable plastic bags remove the entire "education" of the consumer market, allowing them to continue their normal shopping behavior while keeping the environment in mind. The only caveat is that some manufacturers of biodegradable plastic bags do not meet US or European standards, they insist that the real BIO degrade these bags, not just their degradation, such as breaking down into smaller pieces of plastic that continue to pollute surroundings. These standards also require the biodegradation of plastics to meet certain time frames.
